How to Bring Success to Your Telecommuting Job

The change of work environment from office-based to home-based is never easy; but most professionals who moved to working from home found the change to be worth it. Their telecommuting success was mainly attributed to the perseverance, determination, and discipline they put into work. To achieve the same accomplishment, here are some tips that you might want to consider.

First, you need to be in agreement with the employer. Success in working far from a close supervision results from the arraignment and understanding the employer and the home-based employee had. It is essential that you have discussed the work details comprehensively and both of you have agreed on expectations and limitations. The job function or assignment details must be identified and clarified for you to exactly meet the goal. Identify a communication plan as well so that commitment to work is secured. And although this type of work arrangement offers greater flexibility, you still need to inform your employer of your working hours.

Second, your family or those who live with you at home must be informed of the telecommuting job arrangement you will have. Discuss that you may need their support and flexibility as the nature of the work requires their cooperation. Be specific about your need for privacy and absence of interruptions or distractions.

Third, set up your workspace. A room or even a small area can serve as your home office. Having your own work space will help eliminate distractions and help you focus more on the job. Make sure that the area is comfortable and pleasant and has sufficient ventilation and lighting. Do not forget that your need for a personal work station should also be discussed with your family.

And lastly set goals for yourself and practice discipline at all times. Procrastination should be your greatest enemy. We are all aware that working from home means little to less supervision, so you have to be focused and be able to supervise your own work progress. Ensure that you are able to finish tasks at hand and meet deadlines.

Keep in mind that telecommuting is a work arrangement based on communications alone – whether through phone calls, Instant Messaging, or electronic mails. Therefore, the greatest key to your success would be your communication with your employer. Start with managing expectations, proceed with sending frequent updates, and maintain contact through regular consultations. Discipline yourself to take heed of these tips and you are sure to find success on your home-based job.
