Telecommuting – The Flexible Work Arrangement


Sometimes called as e-work, telework and e-commuting, this work from home arrangement appears to be a sought after work set-up today. More and more employees and employers recognize the numerous benefits such system provides. Work from home professionals, or web commuters as they are sometimes called, make use of telecommunications technology to provide service. Telework then substitutes work-related travel and eliminate distance restriction through the use of Internet technology. Since the everyday travel of an employee to the office is replaced by telecommunication links, work appears to be more convenient for employees and more efficient for employers.

In 1973, Jack Nilles laid claim to the terms telework and telecommuting. This form of work arrangement bases productivity according to results and not on close and observable scrutiny of employers to employees. In business terms, work from home set-up follows management by objectives and not management by observation. Two years ago, over 50 million U.S. professionals are capable of working from home although only 2.5 million decided to consider their home as a place of business. But then there were about 17.2 million workers who recognized the efficiency of working remotely and managed to use telecommunication occasionally.

Research observed that only a few companies employ full-time home-based staff; although a number of part-time workers have been identified. Call centers are the primary supporter of home-based work. They regard such arrangement as an employee benefit.

We cannot deny the fact that there are big benefits of making money from home. That is why more opportunities are beginning to emerge as companies and employers see the advantage of this kind of employment set-up. However, it should be noted that with all the job openings that promise earning money from home, workers must be wary and careful in identifying the legitimate jobs. While there are a few rip-off “opportunities,” there are still a number of legitimate job offers. Several organizations set-up websites to assist job hunters in searching for a work from home job from a reputable company.

These jobs also provide regular income similar to what a full-time office worker gets. There are also part-time jobs available for those who wish to try this work arrangement first. But just like in any legitimate job, professionalism is important. There is also the requirement to submit a resume and pass the interview. Of course certain skills are considered and work is evaluated. Most companies outsource clerical and administrative work and majority of such job deals in handling calls, answering emails, writing reports, transcription and the like. With just the necessary skills, a stable Internet connection, a phone line and a reliable computer, one can already start making money from home. Remember to find a legitimate telecommuting job to experience the true benefits of working from home.
